Dodgers’ Top of the Batting Order Taking Shape

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts provided some insight on what the top of L.A.’s lineup could look like at the beginning of the regular season Tuesday.

Roberts said last week he’s leaning towards keeping designated hitter Shohei Ohtani in the leadoff spot and batting shortstop Mookie Betts third, but still had to figure out who would bat second and fourth. In Tuesday’s 11-3 win over the Cleveland Guardians, Kyle Tucker occupied the No. 2 spot while Freddie Freeman batted cleanup.
“You know, most likely,” Roberts said when asked if Tucker and Freeman would hold the same spots come the regular season. “I wanted to kind of see where we’re at. I do like Kyle in the No. 2. He’s an on-base guy. He’s left-handed, right-handed agnostic. Freddie and Will for me are two of our best run producers. To see them in the four and the five, I like that. They should be hitting with guys on base all year. We’ll see but I think we can get used to that.”

Roberts confirmed Will Smith’s spot in then lineup as well, giving fans insight on more than half of the Dodgers’ lineup for the upcoming season.
The Dodgers’ lineup will have marginally shifted since last season in this case, as Tucker’s arrival on a $240 million contract has moved Betts, Freeman and Smith back a spot. Despite a lack of hits so far this spring training, Tucker has shown he can make an impact with runs high in the lineup with three walks and as many runs in his two games.

While Roberts hasn’t confirmed anything beyond the fifth spot in the order, the remainder of the lineup is fairly straightforward.
Big bats will follow Smith, with Max Muncy and Teoscar Hernandez interchangeably filling the No. 6 and 7 spots. Andy Pages — who had a rough second half to 2025 but has been fantastic so far in spring training — will fill the eighth spot, and whoever takes over for Tommy Edman at second base will round out the lineup.
The Dodgers are yet to make a statement on who is most likely to fill in for Edman at the start of the season, but both Santiago Espinal and Hyseong Kim have looked sharp so far.
