Cadillac's F1 Car Is Named After Mario AndrettiCadillac F1 Team

Four years ago, 1978 Formula 1 champion Mario Andretti confirmed to Road & Track that his son Michael was attempting to found a new F1 team. A long run of twists and turns followed, ultimately leading to the rejection of Andretti's team and, later, the acceptance of a Cadillac F1 program built by the same collection of partners, minus the younger Andretti himself. The Cadillac team finally makes its long-awaited debut next Sunday—and, after all that, it will do so with the Andretti name on board.

The honor comes in the form of the model name given to the team's first F1 car, MAC-26. That acronym stands for "Mario Andretti Cadillac," recognizing Andretti's continuing role as an advising voice within the program. It may not be the same as an Andretti-branded Formula 1 team, but it does at least mean that the family's dream of getting the Andretti name onto the grid as a constructor has been realized in some form.

Formula 1 teams generally adhere to their own internal naming convention for stretches of years at a time. If Cadillac were to continue with this as their traditional name format, it would mean that Andretti's name will stay on the car for many seasons to come. Teams do regularly change their naming formats, though, so this is no guarantee that Cadillac will continue with the MAC name long-term.

Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez will turn the first official laps in an MAC-26 in practice for the Australian Grand Prix in one week. Cadillac is not expected to contend for wins in its first year, but the GM-run program is built to grow from here.
