Rams trade four draft picks, including 1st-rounder for Trent McDuffie

The Los Angeles Rams are at it again! They do enjoy, from time to time, trading their first round pick away for an already established star. This time they acquired Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie, in exchange for the 29th overall pick of this year’s draft, and more.

The Chiefs will also get the Rams' fifth and sixth-round picks this April, plus a third-rounder next year, according to an ESPN report.

Yes, that is quite a haul, especially when you consider how next year's draft class is projected to be rather loaded, so a third round pick should have more actual value than usual next spring.

However, we don't know if the 29th pick in the first round this year will be good, mediocre, bad, something else entirely. We do know that McDuffie was first team All-Pro in 2023 and second team All-Pro in 2024.

Injuries plagued him a bit this past season and his form dropped off somewhat. That said, the Chiefs are in a less than optimal position with the salary cap, so a salary shed kind of deal makes sense for them right now. The Rams meanwhile, might have just now become the best team on paper in the whole National Football League.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford may be 37 years old, but he just won the NFL MVP award, so next season he'll be much more formidable than your typical player in his 18th season. The Rams lost a one possession game to the eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks this past season, and they are fully in "win now mode."

This trade made a strong statement, as they directly addressed their team's biggest weakness. Strengthening the secondary, and shoring up the pass defense might be exactly what they need to put themselves over the top.

In addition to the reigning league MVP, the Rams also have one of the NFL's best overall individual players, regardless of position, in Puka Nacua. The superstar wide receiver outlined L.A.'s postseason ambitions for next season, referencing his draft class of 2023.

"That's what you live for," Nacua said in an exclusive with RG about having Super Bowl aspirations. "You live your dream about that as a little kid to play in those big games. Obviously we didn't have the outcome that we wanted, but it drives that competitive edge to head into the offseason, and that motivation to continue to get better.

"I know everybody on our team, with how young we are and how many playoff games have had a chance to play since being in the league. I think all the guys that were drafted by the Rams in 2023 have played a playoff game every single year since I've been in the league."

Nacua was selected by Los Angeles in the fifth round, out of BYU.

The Rams also have one of the finest young offensive minds in the game on their coaching staff in Nathan Scheelhaase. Last season's pass game coordinator, Scheelhaase was elevated to offensive coordinator two weeks ago. This coaching carousel, Scheelhaase was a hot commodity not just for open OC jobs, but he interviewed for some head coaching positions as well.

When you add the McDuffie piece to the overall puzzle, it's easy to see why the Rams are now the new Super Bowl favorites.

And they still hold a first round pick next month, despite their having dealt the 29th overall selection to K.C. for McDuffie. Due to a trade with the Atlanta Falcons last year, the Rams hold the 13th overall selection in this year's draft.
