Former Spartans longtime assistant coach Dwayne Stephens and Western Michigan have parted ways the school announced on Sunday. The news of Stephens' removal as the Broncos head coach was reported by The Field of 68 a few hours before it became official by the school.
Stephens served as the Western Michigan head coach for the last four seasons, after serving nearly 20 years on the Spartans' coaching staff under Tom Izzo. Western Michigan had a record of 42-84 during the four seasons under Stephens, failing to ever finish above .500 on the year.
Stephens will now be in search of his next gig, which very well could be at Michigan State. The Spartans don't currently have an opening on its staff, but his relationship with Izzo is strong enough to where I'm sure something could be worked out if Stephens is interested in returning to East Lansing, Mich. We will have to wait and see when the offseason hits if Stephens will return to Michigan State or look for a new gig elsewhere.
