HOUSTON, TEXAS - MARCH 07: Dominic Canzone #8 of Team Italy celebrates with Jakob Marsee #5 (R) after hitting a three run home run in the seventh inning against Team x during the 2026 World Baseball Classic at Daikin Park on March 07, 2026 in Houston, Texas. From dawn til dusk, yesterday made the most of daylight’s final savings with World Baseball Classic… classics all day long. Heartbreak for Nicaragua at the hands of piscine parent Ozzie Albies and the Netherlands. Puerto Rico defending their home turf to the last breath, with at least fourth-string shortstop Darrell Hernaiz sending San Juan into a frenzy in extra innings over a persistent Panama squad.

Kyle Schwarber, Eugenio Suárez, and… Luis Arraez(?) slugging the U.S. and Venezuela past Great Britain and Israel with authority. Chinese Taipei in tears of joy and relief after salvaging their tournament with a win over South Korea that means all the more after Japan squeaked past a feisty Australia squad early this morning in Tokyo.

All that and more sets up the first Sunday of serious baseball for most fans in 2026.

How the Mariners in the WBC did yesterday:

Games with no Mariners:
Korea 6, Japan 8
Chinese Taipei 5, Korea 4
Nicaragua 3, Netherlands 4
USA 9, Great Britain 1

Puerto Rico 4, Panama 3 (F/10)

Mariners farmhand Abdiel Mendoza pitched a clean two-thirds of an inning and earned a hold in a tense loss.

Israel 3, Venezuela 11

Mariners farmhand Charlie Beilenson, who has WBC eligibility for three countries (US, Israel, New Zealand, which equals the number of degrees he has: he has an undergrad degree in Economics from Brown and a Masters & MBA from Duke), was the only pitcher for Team Israel to post a 0 in the run column, allowing one hit and striking out two over 1.2 innings of work. Former Mariner Eugenio Suárez hit a two-run homer in Venezuela’s big win.

Colombia 2, Canada 8

Leadoff hitter Michael Arroyo collected two hits in the loss, while Josh Naylor had two hits for victorious Canada and took a walk. Arroyo has been having a great spring and continues his solid play in the WBC, but he’s definitely going to get some flak for this:

Josh Naylor also had this cool moment playing with his brother:

Guillo Zuñiga had a rough outing for Team Colombia, giving up three runs on two hits and walking a batter.

Brazil 0, Italy 8

Dominic Canzone nuked a pitch for a three-run home run and also had an RBI single in this drubbing. Miles Mastrobuoni came in as a defensive replacement and got one at-bat, but struck out. The Team Italy celebrations are really top tier.

Today’s Games:

9 AM PT – Colombia (0-2) at Cuba (1-0) on FS2

Colombia has been thin this spring, and they’ve come up short twice already. Their advancement hopes are slim, but a win against Cuba or Panama would likely secure them a spot in the next WBC at minimum. Cuba looked sharp in their opener against Panama, and is coming in following their off day, with designs on advancement in what’s consolidating into a three-team race in San Juan’s Pool A.

9 AM PT – Netherlands (1-1) at Dominican Republic (1-0) on FOX/FOX Deportes

The Kingdom of the Netherlands will need some more magic out of King Willem-Alexander’s hat to outslug a stacked DR roster that chugged early but hit its groove late against Nicaragua in Miami’s Pool D. A’s ace Luis Severino takes the bump for the Republic in opposition to the subjects of the House of Orange.

10 AM PT – Great Britain (0-2) at Italy (1-0) on Tubi

Houston’s Pool B has seen some valiant early efforts by the underdogs of Brazil and Great Britain, but they’ve faded late under the inevitability of the U.S. onslaught. Italy delivered no quarter to Brazil last night, with espressos and cheek kisses aplenty. Neither team is flush with elite pitching, but Italy’s big league adjacent depth is going to be hard for Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Sir Harry Ford to overcome.

4 PM PT – Nicaragua (0-2) at Israel (0-1) on Tubi

Two hard-fought losses for Dusty Baker’s club have shown the Central American nation punching well above their weight. They’ll need to rebound quick from yesterday’s devastation, as Israel presents the only relative peer they’ll face in Miami’s Pool D. Israel took an unsurprising thrashing at the hands of Venezuela Saturday, though Mariners prospect Charlie Beilenson was the lone arm to work a scoreless outing in his 1.2 frames. The same is true for them as Nicaragua: a guaranteed slot in the next WBC is all but assured with a win, while a loss demands beating deeper clubs.

4 PM PT – Panama (0-2) at Canada (1-0) on FS2

Another hard luck underdog, Panama’s pathway gets no easier. While the San Juan pool has no obvious juggernaut thanks to insurance issues, Canada’s club looked every bit the favorite in their Classic opener yesterday. Josh Naylor’s captainship continues with veteran Jameson Taillon on the hill for the Canucks.

5 PM PT – Brazil (0-2) at Mexico (1-0) on FS1

The final game of the day is more lopsided than the rest, on paper. Brazil’s precocious youngsters have had some brilliant moments, but an upset against a team as well-rounded as Mexico would be a shocker. Taijuan Walker takes the bump in front of Randy Arozarena’s crew.
