What is the salary cap cost of Saints moving on from Demario Davis?

· Yahoo Sports

Moving on from Demario Davis opened a hole on top of the New Orleans Saints' depth chart, but what about the salary cap hit? Davis leaving the Saints for the New York Jets, the team that drafted him back in the day, leaves behind a substantial dead money charge of $14.29 million. Throw it on the pile with cap hits for retired players like Derek Carr, Ryan Ramczyk, and Tyrann Mathieu (among others) and you've got a little over $80 million going towards guys who aren't on the team anymore.

That's the bad news. The good news is the Saints knew exactly how much money would be left on their books if Davis left in free agency, and it doesn't cost them anything extra than what they already budgeted. And while that number could keep going up depending on what happens with Cameron Jordan ($18.76 million), Taysom Hill ($13.72 million), and Foster Moreau ($1.4 million), remember: it isn't new money being charged. The Saints knew it was coming, they planned for it, and it's already accounted for.

Hopefully this is the last year dead money really holds them back. The only contracts set to void next offseason and leave cap hits behind are with Alvin Kamara ($16.26 million), Nathan Shepherd ($4.37 million), and Davon Godchaux ($1.9 million). That's nothing compared to the mountains the Saints have have had to climb before. And as far as that goes, how badly were they held back this spring when they still signed top-tier free agents like David Edwards and Travis Etienne Jr.?
