Canada finishes 3-1 in Pool A along with Puerto Rico, but earned the group’s top seed by virtue of the WBC tiebreaker format. Canada will take on the Pool B runner-up on March 14 at Daikin Park in Houston. Puerto Rico will play the Pool B winner on March 13.

As Canada’s only Major League Baseball team, the Toronto Blue Jays did not let the moment pass without congratulating the preferred WBC team of their own fan base.

“OHHH CANADA,” the Jays wrote on their official X account. “Congrats to @BaseballCanada, moving on to the Quarters for the first time in #WorldBaseballClassic HISTORY”

Under WBC rules, ties in the standings are broken based on to the lowest quotient of fewest runs allowed divided by the number of defensive outs recorded in the games in that round between the teams tied.

To that end, holding the Cubans to two runs on March 11 made all the difference in Canada’s quest to win Pool A.

Cuba lost the gold medal to Japan, 10–6, at the inaugural WBC in 2006. But they haven’t been to the Finals since, and now head home following their earliest WBC exit ever.
