Jaylen Waddle contract and Broncos updated salary cap space after trade

When the Denver Broncos agreed to trade for Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle on Tuesday, they also acquired the receiver's remaining contract.

Waddle agreed to a three–year, $84.75 million contract extension with Miami in 2024 when he still had two more seasons (including a fifth-year option) remaining on his rookie contract. So the Broncos have essentially inherited that three-year extension that runs from 2026 to 2028.

Waddle will have a very team-friendly salary cap hit of $4.9 million this season, according to Spotrac.com. Denver was estimated to have around $22 million remaining before the trade, so the team still has enough cap space to make signings (they are still yet to sign an outside free agent this offseason).

Next year, Waddle's cap hit will jump to just over $27 million before increasing to $30.4 million in 2028. Waddle's deal includes a void year in 2029 that will leave behind just over $6 million in dead money if he is not re-signed.

Waddle is guaranteed $17 million this season and $15.2M in 2027, but his contract includes a potential out in 2028. Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac.com has therefore described it as a two-year, $41.2 million contract with the option for a third season. Here's a look at Waddle's cap hits over the next three seasons:

Jaylen Waddle salary cap hits

  • 2026: $4,908,200
  • 2027: $27,083,654
  • 2028: $30,457,746

It's a reasonable contract for Denver, one that the team had room for after restructuring two contracts last week. The Broncos are still projected to have around $18 million available, so more moves could be on the way.
