Congress leader Pawan Khera gets one-week transit anticipatory bail in case filed by Assam CM’s wife

The Telangana High Court on Friday granted transit anticipatory bail for one week to Congress leader Pawan Khera in a forgery and criminal conspiracy case registered by the Assam Police, reported Bar and Bench.

Transit anticipatory bail is a temporary protection from arrest granted in one state to enable persons to approach the courts where the case has been filed.

“The petitioner is granted time for one week to file an application before the concerned court,” Live Law quoted Justice K Sujana as saying in the verdict.

Khera had approached the High Court seeking relief after a first information report was filed against him by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The FIR was filed after the Congress leader claimed on Sunday that he had documentary evidence that showed that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma holds passports of the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda. Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife refuted the allegations.

Reserving her verdict on Thursday, Sujana asked Khera why he had not moved a court in Assam to seek relief.

The case was registered at the Crime Branch Police Station in Guwahati.

During the hearing on Thursday, Assam Advocate General Devajit Saikia had also asked why the Congress leader had moved the Telangana High Court, though he lives in Delhi and the case has been registered in Assam.
