The waiver-obsessed Tigers claimed right-handed reliever Grant Holman on Saturday, April 11, from the Los Angeles Dodgers, adding him to the 40-man roster and optioning him to the Florida Complex League.
The 25-year-old hasn't pitched at any level in the 2026 season, but he hasn't been on the injured list. He appeared in just one game during spring training, completing one inning.
The Tigers transferred shortstop Trey Sweeney from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list, opening spot for Holman on the 40-man roster.
Sweeney – acquired from the Dodgers in a package for right-hander Jack Flaherty at the 2024 trade deadline – has been sidelined since early in spring training with a right shoulder strain.
It's turned into a lingering shoulder injury.
Holman joins the Tigers with 40 games of MLB experience, posting a 4.66 ERA with 18 walks (10.2% walk rate) and 33 strikeouts (18.8% strikeout rate) across 38⅔ innings for the Athletics in 2024-25.
He has two minor-league options remaining, which means the Tigers can shuffle him up and down between the Triple-A and MLB levels throughout the 2026 season.
Holman has already bounced around between the Athletics, Arizona Diamondbacks, Dodgers and Tigers in the 2026 calendar year. He missed more than two months late in the 2025 season with right shoulder rotator cuff tendinitis.
Holman throws a fastball that averages 94.6 mph.
He also features a splitter and a slider.

For the Athletics in 2025, Holman used 47.7% fastballs, 38.9% splitters and 13.3% sliders. His fastball and splitter are used against both right-handed and left-handed hitters, but his slider is a weapon primarily for righties.
The splitter is his best secondary pitch.
The Athletics selected Holman in the sixth round – at No. 188 overall – in the 2021 draft out of Cal. He then made his MLB debut in mid-August 2024 for the Athletics.
