How much did Steyn, Jantjies earn from Two Oceans wins?

· The South African

On Saturday, Gerda Steyn claimed a record-breaking seventh victory at the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon , while little-known Arthur Jantjies shocked the pundits with the biggest triumph of his emerging ultra marathon career.

Running in only his second ultra marathon after claiming sixth position at the 2025 City to City Marathon (2:54:26), Jantjies finished ahead of Onalenna Khonkhobe (03:10:00) and Blessing Zvikomborero Waison.

Jantjies’ name will be emblazoned alongside that of Gerda Steyn, who pulled away from reigning Soweto Marathon champion Margaret Jepchumba moments after going through the marathon mark in 2:34:34.

The fastest women in the history of the World’s Most Beautiful Marathon (3:26:54) never looked back. Steyn went on to cross the finish line in (3:27:43) – the second fastest time of her Two Oceans Marathon career.

Well-deserved winnings for Steyn at Jantjies at the Two Oceans

This year saw a boost in prize money for 2026, with the Ultra Marathon offering a total prize purse of R2 177 400. Specifically, a total of R1 794 000 has been allocated to the Open Category, with the top 10 finishers sharing in the prize purse.

The male and female winners – Steyn and Jantjies – each took home R380 000, while the runners-up will receive R220 000 and third-place finishers R100 000.

“I didn’t break the record but I’m still happy with my race and am really happy with my time. It’s a completely successful day for me,” Steyn told media during the post-race press conference.

“When I won my first Two Oceans, I never envisaged winning seven. I take it year for year. If I’m here next year and ready and fit, then I’ll push for sure. But I also need to accept the fact that I’m getting older. But for now, I’m feeling strong and I feel that I still have a few more years left in my career. So, if seven becomes eight and eight becomes ten, then I’ll take it.”

Meanwhile, Jantjies stated: “It’s a phenomenal step – a big step. It’s history.I’m just a small-town boy winning Two Oceans. That’s something really special.”
