This could be an interesting trade idea to think about as the 2026 Major League Baseball rolls along. The San Diego Padres can fix some early shortcomings in their pitching rotation with one move.

The thought of moving closer Mason Miller to the starting rotation is being floated around, but it is not going to happen

Bleacher Report released a comprehensive list of some early buy options for contenders before the season gets too far in, and the Padres and New York Mets were linked with a massive mock deal. Mets ace Freddy Peralta goes to San Diego for Catcher Ethan Salas, Outfielder Ryan Wideman, and pitcher Tucker Musgrove.

Let's dig a little deeper here.

First, Peralta is the Mets' No.1 guy in the rotation, but there is another who can take his place. Nolan McLean has been a rockstar thus far, and he is not showing any signs of slowing down with a 1-1 record and an ERA of 2.28.

But, it is important to remember that the Mets are free-falling right now.

Second, the Padres have to look in the mirror and decide if this is the right time to be going all-in. The return here features Salas, who is this franchise's best overall prospect, and Wideman, who is also in the top-10 prospects list for their future. Musgrove is also another talented arm.

If the two teams make this deal, the Padres win with an established arm in a pitching room that is currently tied for 13th in opposing batting average at .234, and has a combined 170 strikeouts, good enough for ninth-best in all of baseball. But recent injuries are starting to become an issue.

The Mets also win by securing their future behind the plate with a 1-2 punch in Salas and Francisco Alvarez. Salas has a .259 batting average in Double-A San Antonio with a double and two RBIs to his credit.

This mock might have a little more life to it than just an idea.
