Three months after her last bout, in which she sustained an eye injury, Namajunas (14-8 MMA, 12-7 UFC) has at last been given medical clearance to resume training. The former UFC strawweight champion suffered a nasty eye poke during her decision loss to Natalia Silva at UFC 324 on Jan. 24 in Las Vegas.
On Monday, "Thug" Rose provided an update on her health in an Instagram post and called for stricter punishments for fighters who commit eye pokes, regardless of intention.
"So you wanna be a fighter?" Namajunas wrote. "Three months, and now I'm healthy, finally. Thumb and eye are all fixed up. I'm a bit out of shape, but I’m cleared to train now. I really hope eye pokes will be taken more seriously in the future. I propose instant purse deduction even for an accident. An accident that could seriously affect a fighter's health long-term. Anyways, I’m just grateful that it was not more serious."
Namajunas had eye surgery a couple of days after UFC 324 to get a canalicular tube implanted, which is a small, flexible tube placed in the eyelid's tear drainage system to treat injuries. You can see the removal of what appears to be the tube in her video.
More often than not, MMA referees wait up to a second, and sometimes even a third, eye poke before they deduct a point from the fighter who committed the foul. In Namajunas' case, Silva wasn't deducted a point in the bout despite causing her significant damage. Namajunas wants a monetary penalty for fighters who commit eye pokes.
