The Blue Jays had originally listed Max Scherzer as their probable starter for Wednesday's contest but placed the three-time Cy Young Award winner on the injured list Monday afternoon.

"ROSTER MOVES: RHP Max Scherzer placed on 15-day IL (right forearm tendinitis, left ankle inflammation) RHP Chase Lee recalled from Triple-A and will be active tonight," the team's official account posted on X.

Scherzer is no stranger to the IL.

The 41-year-old future Hall-of-Famer recorded at least 23 starts and 145 1/3 innings pitched every season from 2009 to 2023 (except for the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign) but has missed significant time due to injuries since then.

Scherzer was limited to nine starts and 43 1/3 innings pitched with the Texas Rangers in 2024 and 17 and 85 with Toronto last season, respectively.

"Mad Max" re-signed with the Blue Jays over the winter but has struggled in 2026, going 1-3 with a 9.64 ERA across 18 2/3 innings covering five starts.

Monday's news comes as Scherzer is just one strikeout away from 3,500 in his career, a mark only reached by 10 players in MLB history.

Boston left-hander Ranger Suarez will square off against Toronto righty Dylan Cease on Monday, with Red Sox rookie Payton Tolle slated to face Blue Jays star Trey Yesavage on Tuesday.

Boston has listed Brayan Bello as its probable starter on Wednesday, while Toronto's decision is now to be determined.
