Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal was scratched from his start against the Boston Red Sox on Monday.
After originally being reported as a precautionary move, the Tigers announced that the back-to-back AL Cy Young Award winner has loose bodies in his throwing elbow and will require surgery.
The Athletic's Cody Stavenhagen reports there is no timetable for Skubal's return. Skubal's unfortunate injury places him in the same category as two other aces in the American League.
"The top-3 finishers in American League Cy Young voting last season are now all on the injured list," Chandler Rome of The Athletic wrote on X earlier this afternoon.
Last year's second-place finisher, Garrett Crochet of the Boston Red Sox, was placed on the 15-day IL on April 29 due to left shoulder inflammation. Crochet's MRI revealed no structural damage, but it was a huge blow to the already struggling Red Sox.

Hunter Brown, who earned a third-place selection in last season's Cy Young voting, is on the 15-day IL with a Grade 2 right shoulder strain.
The right-hander missed almost all of April and could be out for at least another month. The Astros have gone 8-17 since Brown was placed on the IL on April 5.
Losing Skubal is rough, but if the Tigers can find a way to play competitive baseball and remain .500 or slightly above until he returns, they should be in OK shape.
