Trump, an avid golfer and golf fan, made an appearance during the third round of the LIV Golf Virginia event taking place at the Trump National Golf Club on Lowes Island in Sterling, Virginia, on Saturday, May 9. It occurred less than one week after he attended the final round of the PGA Tour's Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral in Miami.
Trump was seen behind a glass partition chatting with his son Eric as play continued on Saturday afternoon.
Trump's visit comes at a perilous moment for LIV Golf, which is attempting to secure new long-term funding after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund announced it would be pulling its financial backing of the golf league after the 2026 season as part of a strategic shift. LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neill told reporters on May 5 the emphasis will remain on team golf as the league looks to secure future investment, and that it's still finalizing a business plan without Saudi backing.
Trump has been involved in helping to find a reunification solution for professional golf since the inception of LIV Golf. Tiger Woods, PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan and PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan were among a contingent that met with Trump at the White House in February 2026 for what Monahan described as a "constructive working session" at the time. Trump expressed hope recently that the PGA Tour would welcome back LIV Golf members.
"I do believe that all of the golfers, the great golfers, should be playing against each other," Trump told reporters during a news conference on April 30. "... I want to see Rory (McIlroy) playing Bryson DeChambeau. I want to see big Jon Rahm play Scottie (Scheffler), who's so great. ... That's why the Masters were so good because you saw everybody together."
LIV Golf has enjoyed the support of President Trump throughout its five-year run, with events held at Trump-affiliated golf courses every season of the league's existence. Trump has previously attended several tournaments and participated in pro-ams in conjunction with them.
LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau, who appeared alongside Trump inside the Oval Office earlier this week to announce the return of the Presidential Fitness Test, said recently he could focus on his YouTube channel if LIV Golf were to fold after this year. It's still unclear what sanctions LIV Golf members who left the PGA Tour could face if they were to attempt to return to the PGA Tour in the wake of LIV's uncertain future.
LIV Golf Virginia concludes with final-round action on May 10 at Trump National Golf Club.
