Luka Doncic's hamstring injury was more severe than initially thought

Once Luka Doncic suffered a hamstring strain on April 2 against the Oklahoma City Thunder, fans felt the Los Angeles Lakers' season was practically over. The rest of the team fought hard the rest of the way and was able to upset the Houston Rockets in the first round of the playoffs, but it was swept in the Western Conference semifinals by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Doncic recently spoke to the media and said that when he was initially evaluated following the injury, he was told it would take eight weeks for him to recover. Indeed, according to a report in The Athletic, when the superstar went to Spain for treatment, the injury was found to be more serious than initially thought.

The good news, according to that report, is that Doncic has already begun eating healthily and shouldn't be limited in his offseason preparation for next season.

"Doncic didn’t play again after suffering his hamstring injury," wrote Dan Woike and Sam Amick. "While an MRI conducted in Dallas originally showed a Grade 2 lower hamstring strain, further medical evaluation in Spain showed a deeper and more severe hamstring injury, according to a league source.

"He’s already begun the same strict offseason diet he undertook to transform his body last summer and is currently pain-free in the hamstring, positive signs for his long-term health.

"The expectation is that he won’t be limited in his offseason preparation for next year, the Lakers’ top priority in a good position to lead whatever roster the Lakers put alongside him."

Doncic had put together an outstanding season at the time of his injury. He averaged 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 8.3 assists and 1.6 steals a game while shooting 47.6% from the field and 36.6% from 3-point range. He led the NBA in scoring average for the second time, and he upped his game in March as the Lakers won 16 of 18 games just prior to his injury.
