Caitlin Clark, welcome (most likely) to the world of load management.
After the Indiana Fever unexpectedly ruled the superstar guard out for Wednesday night's home game against the Portland Fire, real questions about load management started to bubble up.

Fieldhouse Files reporter Scott Agness adding that the move to sit Clark was "part of a strategic management plan for the season" only added fuel to that file.
After an injury-plagued 2025 season, it'd make sense for the team to rule Clark out this early in the season if it could, especially against an expansion team it'd be favored to beat. Managing the load in a long season makes a lot of sense for the long run, of course, particularly with a player who missed so much time in 2025.
Fever coach Stephanie White's pregame explanation for Clark's absence not being a huge deal and also not being an example of load management didn't make a lot of sense.
"She's healthy. We're not managing anything," White said, per ESPN's Alexa Philippou. "This is just a back issue that we want to make sure we give the time to be ready."
While the team has been monitoring Clark's back as early as the season opener, White confirming that Clark is "healthy" while ruling her out for a single game at the last second is just incredibly odd if it's not to manage Clark's game load. We're sure Clark felt some stiffness in her back, but it's probably something she would typically play through, if not for pre-ordained load management.
The Athletic's Seerat Sohi nailed her analysis for why she thinks the Fever are managing Clark's reps.
"Everything about this screams load management," she wrote on social media. "Scott Agness reporting that 'this is part of a strategic management plan for Clark.' The W being in the midst of its first 44th game season. Clark herself tracking her own load via wearable devices, knowing how many miles she runs in games.
"And then there’s the timing, which feels designed to make the decision not feel premeditated, but obviously upsets fans along the way. Steph White walking the line of 'shes-not-hurt-and-this-won't-linger-but-idk-i'm-not-a-doctor' is how you rest stars without drawing the ire of the league office, except everything around Caitlin gets loud (and conspiratorial) fast."
The NBA has struggled with load management controversies for a while now. It was bound to make it to the WNBA sooner than later, particularly with more games. If it's not load management, consider us confused.
