Brooklyn handyman-turned-serial killer gets 30 to life for murdering three seniors

A man has been sentenced to 30 years to life in prison after admitting to killing three senior women in their apartments in the New York City Housing Authority.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said Kevin Gavin, 71, killed the trio separately in horrific attacks between 2015 and 2021 after they had hired him to help with repairs and errands, according to brooklynda.com .

The serial killer and his victims all lived in the same building and he gained entry into their apartments as a handyman.

Following his arrest on Jan. 21, 2021, he confessed to all three killings and said they resulted from disputes over money he claimed the victims owed him.

‘Acts of shocking depravity’

“These were acts of shocking depravity and cruelty against three elderly women who should have been safe inside their own homes.” said Gonzalez in a statement.

He stabbed Myrtle McKinney, 82, to death by sticking a knife in her neck, stomped on the neck and chest of second victim Jacolia James, 83, and strangled Juanita Caballero, 78, with a phone cord around her neck, all inside their apartments at the NYCHA’s Carter G. Woodson Houses in Brownsville.

Following Caballero’s death, Gavin was caught on video surveillance using her debit card at multiple locations.

Gonzalez called the victims “beloved members of their families and their community” and said Gavin “exploited their trust, entered their homes, and took their lives with brutal violence.”

Gavin was sentenced by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Dineen Ann Riviezzo after pleading guilty on April 24 to one count of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder.

“The pain he inflicted on their loved ones is immeasurable, and today’s sentence cannot undo that grief,” Gonzalez said. ” But it ensures that he will spend the rest of his life in prison and never again prey on another vulnerable neighbour.”
