The bad news is that the Hammers do not control their own destiny. But there are two scenarios -- one much more likely than the other -- in which West Ham stay up.

The key matches kick off simultaneously on Sunday. Tottenham Hotspur takes on Everton, and West Ham clashes with Leeds United.

Everything is on the line for West Ham and Spurs, the proud London rivals.

What does West Ham need to do to avoid relegation?

The first thing that has to happen, no matter what, is West Ham has to win.

The Hammers are on 36 points, with Spurs on 38. Anything less than a victory for West Ham means relegation.

In the simplest scenario, West Ham wins and Tottenham loses. That puts the Hammers on 39, above Spurs' 38, and keeps West Ham up.

The more complex scenario is almost impossible. If Tottenham draws, West Ham would need to win by 12 goals to remain in the Premier League.

Spurs enters Sunday with a negative-10 goal difference.

West Ham enters the day with a negative-22 goal difference.

That's almost certainly too much to be made up in one day, but it's technically not impossible.
