Why Gian Piero Gasperini deserves massive credit for Roma’s Champions League qualification
· Yahoo Sports
Serie A side Roma confirmed their qualification for the Champions League after picking up a 2-0 win over Verona. They had left things in their own hands after the win over Lazio and they didn’t leave any stone unturned today.
Gian Piero Gasperini has guided his team to the Champions League in his very first season, with Roma playing in the competition next season for the first time in seven years.

Some weeks ago, this didn’t seem possible at all. Gasperini and ex-advisor Claudio Ranieri were at loggerheads publicly. They questioned each others’ involvement in decision over transfers, making Roma the centre of talk in Calcio.
Ranieri left but for a while, results didn’t improve. That isn’t the only problem Gasperini has faced either.
Right after his arrival, he was quite vocal about incomings. As many expected, they didn’t quite arrive on time, leaving him reeling for at least six months. Injuries picked up by Donyell Malen and Artem Dovbyk left Roma without a recognised striker for weeks.
They pushed for an arrival, which arrived late in January in the form of Donyell Malen. He made immediate impact but there were always concerns if Gasperini can really instill his ideas around man-marking and high intensity in the very first season.
He has silenced those doubts exceptionally, despite having a squad which can’t always play his way. But he has made it work, identifying profiles that add something to specific roles in the side, until new signings have been made.
That is due credit to his abilities as a manager. Many associate him with being fairly radical and rather hell-bent on his ways. But throughout the campaign, Gasperini should that he has evolved quite a bit. While keeping basic principles of his system same, he altered minor ideas to inculcate the strengths of the players available.
In a season when a lot could’ve gone terribly wrong, he has carried Roma to safe shores.
