When it comes to getting the news in Canada, the CRTC says there appears to be a generational divide between those watching it on TV compared to those getting it online.

“A lower proportion used regular television as a primary source for their news and information content,” said in-house research, according to Blacklock’s Reporter .

“The most commonly mentioned sources for news and information are television (46%), followed by online media (37%), radio (34% ) and online social media video sources (29%),” said the report Public Opinion Research Tracker Wave Five.

Still, those national averages don’t reflect a generational divide, as the report said the typical cable television subscriber in Canada is over 55.

Divide between TV/social media for news comes down to age: Report

“Canadians 55 or older were more likely to be satisfied with the news and information they receive than younger Canadians,” said the report, adding Canadians under 45 were more likely to rely on social media for news and information.

Ipsos Limited questioned 2,554 people nationwide for the findings and the CRTC paid $249,950 for the study.

The report followed an earlier study released last Jan. 15 that indicated Canadians under 40 were less likely to be “satisfied with the quality of information and depth analysis offered by Canadian news media.”

Audience members over 65 “were more likely to be satisfied” and likelier to “trust the information provided by Canadian news media to be accurate and impartial.”

TV in Canada was already heading south in 2023, according to a CRTC report, Harnessing Change: Financial Model Of The Canadian Television Sector.

“Each year a larger share of ad spending in Canada is flowing to the internet and other digital platforms,” it said. “This will ultimately mean even a higher audience share of the broadcast platform will yield less advertising revenue that that same share does today.”
