Dallas Cowboys Urged to Trade for Pro Bowl Pass-Rusher
· Yahoo Sports
Before the offseason even began, the Dallas Cowboys were viewed as a team almost guaranteed to make a big move to acquire an impact pass-rusher. Dallas has done just that.
It began by trading a 2027 fourth-round pick for 2024 Pro Bowl edge-rusher Rashan Gary. Then, armed with two first-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Cowboys used one of them to select UCF’s Malachi Lawrence with the 23rd overall pick.

Yet, there’s no guarantee that the 22-year-old Lawrence can make an immediate impact, and even the 28-year-old Gary will be making a big change, going to a new team for the first time in his seven-year NFL career. In other words, there could still be room for improvement on a Cowboys defense that allowed more points than anyone a season ago.
Matt Kartozian-Imagn ImagesRecently, Arizona Cardinals insider Kyle Odegard revealed that Pro Bowl edge rusher Josh Sweat is “not particularly happy” with the team. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox took that report and urged the Cowboys to make a trade offer for the 29-year-old, who’s coming off an impressive 12-sack season.
“Dallas has taken steps to rebuild its pass rush this offseason,” Knox wrote. “However, with Clowney still unsigned, James Houston is the Cowboys’ most productive returning edge-rusher (5.5 sacks in 2025). While Gary, Houston, and the rookies may make for a functional edge rotation, the Cowboys shouldn’t leave anything to chance. If Sweat becomes available, adding him would help Dallas get the most out of its 2026 campaign.”
Plus, Sweat already has familiarity with first-year Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker. The two overlapped in 2024 when Parker served as the Philadelphia Eagles‘ defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator, winning a Super Bowl in the process.
