The No. 3 seed Spartans (33-28) won their second consecutive Big South Conference championship, beating No. 6 Longwood 8-1 to secure a trip to the NCAA Tournament regionals on May 24 at Gardner-Webb's John Henry Moss Stadium.

The Big South tournament was moved from Asheville's HomeTrust Park, home of the Asheville Tourists, after inclement weather in the area caused delays.

Upstate scored three runs on walks in the bottom of the first inning and added runs in the second, third and fifth innings. Wylie Waters and Brady Small each hit two-run homers.

The Spartans have reached the Big South Championship game each of the last four seasons, becoming the third team in the conference's history to accomplish the feat. Last season's conference title earned the Spartans' first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Longwood (34-27) forced a winner-take-all game with a 4-1 win in Sunday's first game. The Lancers won five games in a row after losing their first game of the double-elimination tournament.
