Penguins back on home ice for Eastern Conference Finals

(WBRE/WYOU) — The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are four wins away from being crowned kings of the east. The Pens begin the Eastern Conference Finals at home, Wednesday night against the Toronto Marlies. It will be the team’s first game in the conference finals since 2008.

Before Wednesday’s 7:05pm puck drop, WBS hit the ice once more at the Toyota Sportsplex for a morning skate. The team is practicing for the best-of-seven series against a Toronto team they split the season series with. The Marlies grabbed the win in the first contest between the teams in November. Toronto won 4-3 in overtime over the Pens at the Mohegan Arena. The Pens avenged in the early season loss in March against Toronto. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton also a 4-3 victor on the road.

Coach Kirk MacDonald spoke with the media after Wednesday morning skate. Coach praised his young team’s maturity and growth throughout the playoff push,

“Our young guys are seeing a lot, so I’m not concerned. They’re wise beyond their years. I like it. I think organizationally, for us to continue to play with our young guys making an impact is really important.” said MacDonald.

Both the Penguins, and Marlies are coming off of five game series in the division finals. The Pens advanced after an 8-2 win over the Springfield Thunderbirds. The Marlies also advanced after a Game 5 win, 3-2 over the Cleveland Monsters.

The Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza will play host for both games one and two of the series. Game 1 is on Wednesday, May 27th. Game 2 follows on Friday, May 29th. Both games start at 7:05pm.
