Solapur Division Undertakes Critical OHE Enhancement Work for Future-Ready Rail Operations

The Solapur Division of Central Railway has undertaken an extensive Overhead Equipment (OHE) enhancement work in connection with the construction of the new Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Solapur Yard. Following the successful dismantling of the 103 year old ROB at Solapur Yard on 14th December 2025, construction of the new bridge was commenced by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). To facilitate this important infrastructure project and ensure safe railway operations, the Electrical Traction Distribution (TRD) Department of Solapur Division has undertaken the critical task of modifying the existing OHE network in the affected section of Solapur station yard.

The OHE located beneath the old bridge structure had severe electrical clearance restrictions from both the bridge and trains operating below it. Consequently, a specially designed OHE arrangement had been provided in this section. With the construction of the new ROB underway, the division has initiated the conversion of this special arrangement into a conventional OHE system. This modification will facilitate higher train speeds, improve electrical clearances and significantly enhance operational safety.

The work commenced on 22nd May 2026 after meticulous planning and detailed coordination. Given the strategic importance of the busy Mumbai–Chennai Golden Quadrilateral route passing through Solapur, special emphasis has been placed on executing the work with minimum disruption to train operations. To expedite the execution of this important work, four dedicated teams comprising approximately 30 personnel, two Tower Wagons and one Rail Crane have been deployed continuously during the block period. Despite sweltering weather conditions, the teams are working in close coordination and mission mode to complete the OHE modification work within the stipulated timeframe.

The project also involved overcoming significant engineering challenges. The site had an OHE portal infringing the alignment of the proposed ROB girder, while the portal foundations were found to be infringing the proposed pier column foundations. Railways successfully planned and executed the timely removal and modification of these critical assets, thereby enabling NHAI to proceed with bridge construction activities as per the planned schedule.

The ongoing OHE height-raising and modification work demonstrates the close coordination between railways and highway authorities in delivering critical public infrastructure. Upon completion, the upgraded OHE system will enhance operational safety, improve reliability and facilitate smoother train operations through Solapur. Simultaneously, it will accelerate the construction of the new ROB at Solapur Yard, a vital project expected to improve urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion and strengthen road connectivity for the residents of Solapur.

The Solapur Division remains committed to the safe, efficient and timely execution of infrastructure projects while ensuring minimal inconvenience to rail users and the general public. The Solapur Yard ROB project reflects the efforts of Central Railway towards creating a safer, more efficient and future-ready transportation network for the region.
