Caston gears for Fort Wayne opponent at regional

Caston survived West Central’s comeback attempt in its 6-5 sectional championship victory on Monday in Remington.
The Class 1A No. 5 Comets head to Fort Wayne for a one-game regional on Saturday.

The Comets (21-5) know they can’t overlook the big-city Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian Braves (8-14), who enter with a sub .500 record but are a perennial sports powerhouse in multiple sports as a private school.
The regional will be held at Fort Wayne Carroll High School. First pitch is at 11 a.m. Tickets are available at IHSAA.org and EventLink.com.
The Comets have the advantage on paper as they are ranked ninth in Class 1A in the MaxPreps Computer Rankings and the Braves are ranked 26th.
The Braves had lost five in a row before they entered the tournament, when they beat Fremont 6-5 and Fort Wayne Canterbury 14-4.
Sophomore Max Warner is 2-2 with a 1.13 ERA to lead Blackhawk. He has fanned 43 and walked just four in 31 innings. He had the win against Fremont.
Senior Brady Ellington is 3-1 with a 4.03 ERA. He has struck out 34 and walked 24 in 33 innings. He pitched some in both sectional wins. Junior Isaac Stayton had the win against Canterbury.
The Comets have went with a three-arm pitching attack in the tournament.
Junior Carson Harness is 6-3 with a 2.60 ERA. He has 96 strikeouts and 28 walks in 62 innings. Sophomore Logan Mollenkopf is 8-1 with a 2.83 ERA. He has 67 strikeouts and 38 walks in 42 innings. Junior Brodie Howard is 3-1 with a 3.87 ERA. He has 37 strikeouts and 12 walks in 25.1 innings.
The Comets’ tournament lineup has included center fielder Logan Mollenkopf (.388, 37 R) batting leadoff, followed by senior shortstop Eli Holloway (.372, 22 RBI, 29 R), senior catcher Gavin Mollenkopf (.451, 1 HR, 20 RBI, 39 R), sophomore first baseman London Herd (.417, 27 RBI, 26 R), sophomore third baseman Parker Zimpleman (.412, 4 HR, 43 RBI, 20 R), second baseman Howard (.342, 25 RBI), pitcher Harness (.180, 20 R), sophomore left fielder Tucker Woolever (.343) and senior designated hitter Lucius Edson (.194). The starting right fielder is senior Elijah Zabel.
The game will be broadcast on the radio on Hoosier Country 103.7-FM and online on the educational affiliate The Charger Sports Network.
