The Boston Red Sox are having a very disappointing 2026 season, and things have gone very wrong for multiple reasons.

Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet are hurt, the Caleb Durbin trade might be one of MLB's biggest disasters, and Alex Cora has long since been fired. With how the season's going, it's hard to call it anything other than a disaster.

Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report projected that the Red Sox are likely to become "reluctant sellers" this season by the trade deadline. And while that's far from ideal, it's actually a "realistic" outcome that might be the best path forward for Boston this year.

Why Red Sox selling at trade deadline would be 'realistic' decision

"As much as chief baseball officer Craig Breslow might be holding out hope that the Red Sox get back into things, they're going to have to be realistic if they remain in the cellar of the AL East," Kelly writes. "Realistic would likely mean capitalizing on Aroldis Chapman's value."

Selling this year for the Red Sox might actually be the best course of action for the future of the franchise. Anthony and Crochet are hurt and likely won't be at 100% this season, even if they come back.

Trading some players now to get back as much value as possible, and undergoing a soft reset, might be all the Red Sox can realistically do this year at the deadline.

Aroldis Chapman is sure to draw significant trade interest this year, and he could fetch a huge return in the trade market that could make a deal worthwhile for Boston.

MORERoman Anthony mightve been overhyped for Red Sox

Breslow has to cut his losses and actually part with some of their players in trades to build a contender in the future.

This team has a ton of young talent, and investments have been made into players beyond the 2026 and 2027 seasons. Even if it means a step back for a moment, selling makes sense to set the team up for long-term success.

Kelly believes that Breslow and company need to get realistic, cut their losses, and sell at the deadline.

As much as it will sting to make such a decision, it would be in the best interest of the franchise to ship off some key players this year in an expected seller's market and plan for the future instead of the 2026 season.
