Central Railway observed World Environment Day 2026 on 05.06.2026.

Prateek Goswami, Additional General Manager, Central Railway administered the pledge to protect environment and motivate others about the importance of environmentally friendly habits, to Principal Head of Departments, Officers and staff.

Earlier the Additional General Manager and CR team attended the administering of Pledge by Satish Kumar, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Railway Board, through video conference.

As a run up to World Environment Day 2026, a comprehensive 22-day environmental awareness campaign was conducted from May 15, 2026 to June 05, 2026 across all five of its divisions (Mumbai, Bhusaval, Nagpur, Pune, and Solapur) and major workshops. The campaign successfully mobilized thousands of railway officials, staff, passengers, and local communities to promote sustainability, robust waste management, and the absolute reduction of single-use plastics.

Key Highlights of the 22-Day Campaign

1.Launch & Environmental Commitments

Official Launch: The campaign commenced with administrative environment pledges administered to officers and staff across all divisions.

Green Activism: Mass plantation drives and environmental walkathons were organised. The Matunga Workshop organized a mega-rally featuring nearly 500 participants promoting energy conservation and water security.

2. Passenger Engagement & Infrastructure Upgrades

"Clean Platforms, Green Future": To improve source segregation, twin and colour-coded dustbins (dry/wet waste) were installed across major stations on Central Railway.

On-Site Solutions: New Plastic Bottle Crushing Machines (PBCM) were inaugurated at key locations and commuters were systematically guided on utilizing this infrastructure.

Outreach: "Carry Your Own Water Bottle" and "Say No to Plastic" stickers, banners, and workshops engaged commuters directly at primary stations on Central Railway.

3. Community Cleanliness & Eco-Friendly Catering

Catering Reforms: Partnering with IRCTC, Central Railway launched drives utilizing non-plastic, biodegradable cutlery, highlighted by an eco-friendly bamboo stall at Nagpur Station.

Green Waste Management: A vermi-compost plant was spotlighted for processing organic waste and leaf litter into high-quality manure for gardens at various locations including Matunga Workshop , Reay Road station etc.

Workforce Mobilization: Extensive scrap segregation, pre-monsoon drain cleaning, and intensive colony cleaning drives were executed across workshops in Parel, Sanpada, Badnera, and Manmad.

4. Intensified Sensitization Drives

Enforcing Plastic Bans: Mumbai Division deployed strict monitoring teams across station vendor stalls to reinforce single-use plastic restrictions, guiding them toward biodegradable alternatives.

Creative Outreach: Cultural teams and the Central Railway Bharat Scouts and Guides staged high-impact street plays (Nukkad Natak) at Bhusawal, Nagpur, Pandharpur, Shegaon, and Kalaburagi stations, delivering impactful messaging on climate change.

Microplastic Mitigation: Seminars at the Matunga Workshop trained employees and vendors on the "partial pouch-cutting" technique (leaving the small cut piece attached to milk/oil pouches) to prevent microplastics from entering the ecosystem.

4. Tree plantation activity

Tree plantation activities were carried out at various locations on Central Railway. Reay Road station of Mumbai division contributed immensely to this campaign with its various activities including tree plantation and compost plant on station premises.

Central Railway remains firmly dedicated to integrating sustainability into its daily operations and leading green infrastructure reforms.

Central Railway also appeals to passengers to actively assist us in keeping railway premises clean and free of single-use plastics. Passengers can contribute directly by carrying reusable water bottles, opting for eco-friendly bags, and strictly utilizing the segregated dustbins provided at stations.
