USC walked off by North Carolina as Trojans’ season ends in heartbreak

For much of Sunday afternoon, it looked as though USC baseball was headed to the College World Series. With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Trojansled North Carolina 3-2, needing just two outs to get back to Omaha for the first time in 25 years.

Instead, they got heartbreak. UNC came back to tie the game at three on a sacrifice fly. Then, outfielder Owen Hull hit a walk-off RBI double to send the Tar Heels to the College World Series and end the Trojans’ season.

In the coming days, we will have plenty of time to analyze all of the chaos that took place in the bottom of the ninth inning, as well as the big picture surrounding the program. But for now, the reality is simple: This was an absolutely heartbreaking loss for USC.

The Trojans were two outs away from getting back to the sport’s biggest stage for the first time in a quarter century. Instead, they suffered a brutal defeat. That will surely haunt USC fans this summer and until the program finally makes it to Omaha.
