Williams’ return to tennis was a momentous occasion for fans, but her loved ones ensured she received an outpouring of love and support. The athlete’s first game in nearly four years went down on Tuesday, June 9, at the Queen’s Club Championship in London.

Williams played in a doubles match with 19-year-old Victoria Mboko, crushing their opponents Erin Routliffe of New Zealand and America’s Nicole Melichar-Martinez in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2. The London tournament saw Williams’ family watching her reclaim all her glory.

The tennis icon’s husband, Alexis Ohanian, and their two daughters, Olympia and Adira, proudly supported Williams’ sensational return. PEOPLE reported that Williams’ pal, Lindsey Vonn, who also un-retired in her 40s, attended the doubles match.

The Tennis Legend Was In High Spirits During The Match

Williams’ triumphant return to tennis saw her rocking a light-pink Nike warm-up jacket, a tennis dress, and matching pink Nike shoes. She did not resemble an athlete returning to the court with her fierce attacks, even serving a 113 mph ace at one point.

Williams appeared to enjoy every second of the match as she reportedly attacked Routliffe and Melichar-Martinez with strong volleys. Her victory may be the first of two scheduled matches, as Williams revealed last week that she would play doubles at the Berlin Tennis Open.

The tournament is set to begin on June 15, but Williams’ partner has not been announced. However, she may return to reclaim the singles throne, telling reporters on June 7 that she hasn’t closed the book on single games. In her words:

“I feel like I probably need to train a little bit more if I want to play singles, and we will see if I get there, and if not… that’s not my journey right now.”

Serena Williams Confirmed Her Comeback In Style

Before returning to the court, The Blast reported that Williams had confirmed her comeback in a social media post. She shared a video of herself in a white tennis dress, walking on a tennis court towards a bench where her phone was blowing up.

The message “Guess everybody heard the news” flashed across the screen while Williams could be heard in the background, joking, “I gotta change my number.” She captioned the brief clip, “Good news travels fast,” sending fans into a frenzy.

Comments like “Serena on grass!” and “the Queen returns!” flooded the comment section as fans celebrated Williams’ comeback. Many were happy to see her in shape, while others claimed the way she moved on the court was like she never left.

The Olympic Gold Medalist Sparked Mixed Reactions For Her Parenting

Williams’ triumphant return in her family’s presence comes two months after she sparked mixed reactions for her parenting. In April, The Blast reported that Williams had posted about an emotional moment in her home, where she was forced to discipline her oldest daughter.

The athlete explained that she had told Olympia to go to bed, but the child refused. In response, Williams stopped her daughter from attending a scheduled sleepover. She revealed the move broke Olympia’s heart, and she cried alongside the little girl.

“Discipline sucks. But sometimes it’s important,” Williams concluded. Her words didn’t sit right with some fans, who slammed her for using the wrong method to discipline her child. Meanwhile, others mocked the emotional confession, noting they never expected such words from Williams.

Serena Williams Has Been Vocal About Her Motherhood Experience

Although some fans were shocked by Williams’ update, it wasn’t the first time she had been open about her motherhood experience. The Blast shared in May that Williams had appeared on a special live taping of “IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson.”

On the show, Williams got candid about her life as a mother of two with a busy career. She confessed that it was challenging juggling her responsibilities, but she always tried to be present for her kids as much as possible. When asked how she did that, Williams shared a strict parenting rule.

According to the tennis legend, she made it her goal to never leave her daughters for more than 24 hours. “I didn’t leave Olympia until she was 6 for 24 hours. That may have been a little extreme, but that’s who I am,” Williams said.
