Unfortunately for the struggling fanbase, there has been one name that has begun to stir up questions surrounding his future with the organization in star safety Grant Delpit. While the Browns’ longtime defensive back continues to appear at all of the team’s offseason events, he has yet to participate in any of the activities this offseason, causing for concern regarding his status for the 2026 season.
When asked about Delpit on Thursday morning, Browns’ safeties coach Ephraim Banda credited the veteran’s communication and leadership throughout this offseason.
“[His] communication throughout the offseason has been phenomenal, his time in the building has been great, [he’s] working hard, being present, doing a great job in meetings, and being a veteran leader,” Banda stated. “He’s the second-longest tenured Brown now [on defense], so it’s great to have him around … we’re going on year four together, so it’s been really good to have that. He did a really good job of checking in and staying in communication.”
Delpit’s future with the Browns
Delpit, a former second-round pick by the Browns in the 2020 NFL Draft, has been a key difference-maker on the defensive side of the ball throughout his time with the organization. During his five years in Cleveland, the 27-year-old has recorded 451 tackles, 25 tackles, 21 pass deflections, and seven interceptions in 78 games.
However, with Delpit entering the final year of his contract, it’s clear that the underrated defender will be looking for a new contract before the beginning of the upcoming season. This offseason, Delpit has been present at OTAs and mandatory minicamp, but has yet to participate in drills with the team.
In addition to his remarks about star safety this offseason, Banda also declined to comment on the rumors surrounding Delpit and a potential “hold-in” heading into the 2026 season.
Looking at the current state of the Browns’ safety unit, the addition of 2026 second-round pick Emmanuel McNeil-Warren gives the organization some flexibility in its extension talks with Delpit, along with former 2023 UDFA Ronnie Hickman signing his restricted free agent tender on Thursday. While it remains unclear as to where the extension talks with Delpit are at this moment, the threat of a potential hold-in from Delpit will be a storyline fans should keep an eye on this offseason.
