The New York Jets can't afford to scoff at any quarterback opportunity.

Their starter in 2026 appears to be Geno Smith. They drafted Cade Klubnik as a project QB. Their future, long-term answer at the position probably isn't on the roster right now.

And while the assumption is that the 2027 first round will hopefully provide that, Davis Mills is a name looming out there that they could consider.

Mills is the Houston Texans' backup QB behind C.J. Stroud, and he could be a trade candidate before he gets to free agency.

If the Jets felt Mills could be a long-term starter, it could be wise to go after him now.

Bleacher Report's Moe Moton wrote in a new article that Mills wouldn't cost a ton to acquire, estimating his trade value as a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 seventh-round pick.

Mills doesn't have immense tools, but whenever he has had to fill in for Stroud, he has gotten the job done.

"Last season, Mills filled in for Stroud between Weeks 10 and 12, tossing five touchdown passes and just one interception," Moton writes. "The Texans won in all three of his starts. Mills' recent efficiency and starting experience could draw interest in the trade market if other teams need a fill-in for an injured starter. Clubs may also want to get ahead of his 2027 free-agency bid."

The difference between Smith and Mills is that Smith is a known commodity as a veteran who, under no circumstance, will be the Jets' long-term starter.

Mills is younger and has never gotten a full chance to start. Maybe he isn't the answer, either, but he has a legitimate chance to still seize an opportunity.

There's nothing out there specifically connecting the Jets to the Texans, but this would be a spot worth considering for New York if the chance came along.
