CLUB MED SOUTH AFRICA RESORT TO OPEN IN KWAZULU-NATAL

The Club Med resort being built in Tinley Manor on KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast is considered to be one of the most expensive resorts built in South Africa costing around R2.2 billion. The resort is in it’s final phase ahead of opening, which will be on 4 July.

This resort has both a luxury beach experience and a safari lodge experience, offering land and water activities. The Club Med resort will be an all-inclusive. It has 411 accommodations, including 310 superior rooms, 35 deluxe rooms and 66 suites in the exclusive collection.

“Delivering a 75-room safari lodge in just 12 months is a challenge anywhere in the world,” said Mayor of KwaDukuza Municipality, Sduduzo Gumede.

“Even more so in a remote location with the logistical, environmental, and operational complexities that come with it,” he continued.

“What has made this possible is the commitment, collaboration, and problem-solving ability of an exceptional contractor and professional team,” he added.

SHARK NET PLAN CHALLENGES

Marine experts have raised concerns about the intention of using shark nets near the resort to reduce the risk of attacks. These measures were approved by the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board with the intention of protecting swimmers from tiger sharks, bull sharks, and great white sharks. However, critics warn that this could har ecosystems.

In an open letter, researchers argue that there has been no shark attack at Tinley Manor since 1994, raising the question of whether the shark nets are necessary.

Scientists have also argued that shark nets and drumlines is not a reliable way to reduce the risk at a specific location. This is because the devices are not physical barriers. Rather this operates as fishing gear, which was designed with the intention of reducing the number of large sharks in an area by killing them.
