Will the BCCI punish Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after the altercation with SL A players?

India A took a rest day on Tuesday, staying at their team hotel in Sigiriya as the management reviewed Monday's controversial Super Over defeat to Sri Lanka A.

The squad had the ground to themselves in terms of reflection time, with Afghanistan A conducting an extended training session at the Rangiri International Stadium while India A stayed away.

Amid speculation that the BCCI could issue a formal warning to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for his involvement in the heated exchanges that brought Monday's match to an ugly close, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia firmly shut down any such possibility when speaking to Sportstar.

"We will let our players concentrate on the tournament, and they should not be distracted by any collateral issues," he said.

What sparked the altercation between India A and Sri Lanka A players?

The tensions boiled over in the worst possible conditions. By the time Sooryavanshi and Suryansh Shedge walked out to chase 17 in the Super Over, visibility at the ground had become a serious concern, with players visibly struggling to pick up the ball in the fading light.

Both the India A players and the team management were unhappy with the umpires reversing their decision and proceeding with the Super Over despite the deteriorating conditions. No formal complaint was made to the match referee, however, leaving the frustration to spill over on the field instead.

Sooryavanshi was involved in a heated exchange with Vishen Halambage and several Sri Lanka A players after the Super Over.

Sources have since indicated that Sri Lankan players had been sledging Sooryavanshi and his teammates about their IPL performances from the very start of the tournament, providing further context for Monday's flashpoint.

India A regroups for must-win Afghanistan clash

With the management drawing a line under the controversy, attention has quickly shifted to Wednesday's must-win fixture against Afghanistan A. India A need a win and favourable results elsewhere to qualify for the June 21 final.

To strengthen the pace attack, which has been inconsistent throughout the series, Ashok Sharma has been drafted into the squad as a replacement for Yudhvir Singh, bringing IPL 2026 form with the Gujarat Titans into a side that cannot afford another defeat.
