Senga Start Goes Badly As Reds Ride Two First-Inning Homers To A 5-3 Win
· Yahoo Sports
The New York Mets lost their second straight game against the Cincinnati Reds tonight, as Cincy rode a pair of homers in the first off starter Kodai Senga to an eventual 5-3 win.
Senga’s redemption start did not go well. He gave up four runs in the first inning via the long ball, as Sal Stewart hit a three-run homer and Spencer Steer followed with a solo shot.

That made it 4-0, and it put the Mets in a hole they couldn’t climb out of. Senga managed to make it through four innings, and his final line was four runs on two hits as he walked four and needed 82 pitches to get that far.
Cincy starter Brady Singer dominated the Mets lineup for most of his outing, but the Mets did manage to get on the board in the third. The run scored via an RBI single from red-hot Bo Bichette, with the tally set up when Brett Baty was hit by a pitch and Francisco Alvarez singled.
But the Reds got that run back in the fifth on an RBI single by Stewart, with the run set up on a double by Edwin Arroyo and a bunt single by Blake Dunn.
That made it 5-1, but the Mets weren’t quite done yet. They made a brief comeback off reliever Sam Moll in the sixth when Mark Vientos hit a two-run, pinch-hit homer to close the gap to 5-3 and make it a game.
The Mets couldn’t take advantage of a vulnerable Reds bullpen after that, though. Cincinnati got scoreless innings from Brock Burke and Tejay Antone, and Tony Santillan came on the ninth to close this one and get his fourth save of the season.
New York got more fine bullpen work from four relievers after Senga departed, with only Cionel Perez giving up a run. Senga is now 0-5 with an ERA of 9.00, and while the Mets are fighting a war of attrition in their starting rotation it’s going to be tough to justify the right-hander getting another start.
Vientos was virtually the only bright spot for the Mets offensively, with only Bichette doing damage with his two-hit night. Reds pitchers scattered seven Mets hits, and they also struck out 11. The Mets will send Nolan McLean to the mond in an early start tomorrow against Nick Lodolo for the Reds to try and salvage the third game of the series.
