Only one person was beating Dustin Johnson when he made the turn Friday in the second round of the 2026 U.S. Open. Five holes later at Shinnecock Hills, Johnson was outside of the projected cut line with three holes to play.

Johnson, the 2016 U.S. Open champion at Oakmont, had an all-time meltdown that came to fruition on the par-4 15th, where he carded a snowman. In his first 28 holes of the week, Johnson was 4 over. Then in a five-hole span, he went 8 over and moved himself to 4 over for the tournament and one outside of the projected cut line with the afternoon wave still to play.
Johnson's troubles started on the par-3 11th, when he made a double. Then he followed with a pair of bogeys before stabilizing, or so we thought, with a par on 14. Then came the 15th.
Johnson found a greenside bunker with his approach shot. His third rolled back into another trap close to the green, and after his fourth swipe, he still was not out of the sand. His fifth then sailed the green, and the trouble only piled up. He finally found the putting surface with his sixth shot, and two putts later, he was in the hole for an 8.

From 4 under to 4 over in five holes. An ejection for the record books. With a couple holes to play, Johnson can't afford to have any more bogeys on the card or he is truly in jeopardy of missing the weekend.
For the first 28 holes, DJ looked like his vintage self. And then it all came tumbling down.
