After battling back and forth with the Chicago White Sox, the Tigers pulled out a dramatic 5-4 walk-off victory in 10 innings. The win capped a series sweep in which Detroit showed much more fight than it had during its recent struggles, and manager A.J. Hinch made sure to recognize the fans who continued to show up and support the club.
Following the victory, Hinch praised the atmosphere at Comerica Park and acknowledged the role Tigers fans played throughout the weekend.
“Our fans showed up this weekend,” Hinch said.
Hinch went on to explain how much of a difference the crowd can make when the team is playing quality baseball.
“This group in here knows exactly what this place is like and how much of a true home-field advantage it is when we play the brand of baseball we did this weekend. We have to earn the right to fill this place.”
The Tigers gave their fans plenty to enjoy on Sunday. Dillon Dingler drove in two runs, Riley Greene collected two hits, Spencer Torkelson added an RBI, and Zach McKinstry continued his recent surge with a pair of hits. Jahmai Jones, who was booed during Saturday’s loss after a key pinch-hit strikeout, also contributed with an infield hit and scored a run.
Detroit finished with 13 hits and erased a late deficit before securing the victory in the bottom of the 10th inning.
While the Tigers still have plenty of work to do to climb back into the American League playoff race, Sunday’s win served as a reminder of what Comerica Park can be like when the team gives fans a reason to believe. According to Hinch, earning that support starts with the product on the field, and this weekend was a step in the right direction.
