The Cincinnati Reds believe they have avoided a significant injury to starting pitcher Nick Lodolo, who left the loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, June 23 with a left wrist contusion.

"Yeah, he did. He's OK," Reds manager Terry Francona said when asked if Lodolo got X-rays after being hit by a grounder to begin the fourth inning. "As long as they can keep the swelling out of there and it doesn't show up tomorrow in worse shape, he should be OK for his next start. We'll certainly keep our eyes on it."

Lodolo labored on the mound for a few moments and was checked on by the Reds medical staff. He then threw a few warmup pitches and remained in the game.

"I thought it was (serious). My hand just went totally numb," Lodolo said. "I was thinking about going to pick up the ball and I couldn't feel my hand. Yeah, I've never been hit like that in the wrist."

Lodolo got into trouble as the Brewers loaded the bases, but he struck out Jake Bauers looking and got Gary Sánchez to fly out to keep the game scoreless. Lodolo was hoping to go back on the mound for the fifth inning, but with stiffness and his pitch count at 75, the Reds turned to the bullpen.

"If he went out and hurt his shoulder because of that, I'd have a really tough time," Francona said.

Lodolo added: “I know where he’s (Francona) coming from. I wanted to keep going, for sure. I was glad I got to finish the inning, at least. When I came in, he was pretty adamant that I wasn’t going back out.”

Lodolo would have five days of rest before his next start, which would be Monday, June 29 against the Brewers at American Family Field.

"I would like to if there’s nothing wrong with it other than just some swelling and stuff like that," Lodolo said. "I think the plan is to get that out of there and go from there.”
