When will Red Sox get Romy Gonzalez back? He gives specific target date

WORCESTER — The Red Sox tend not to put specific timelines on injuries, and for good reason. Romy Gonzalez, though, knows exactly when he wants to return to Boston’s lineup.

After missing the weekend with hip flexor soreness after getting hit by a pitch in that area while rehabbing with Double-A Portland, Gonzalez was in Triple-A Worcester’s lineup Tuesday and went 1-for-4 with a single and a strikeout. The hip issue is behind him, Gonzalez said, and he’s back to getting his timing back after missing the first 2 ½ months of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery in March.

With a big four-game home series against the Yankees on the schedule, Gonzalez is hoping not to be in Worcester long.

“I’m trying to push for Saturday to be activated,” he said Tuesday at Polar Park. “We’ll see what happens. Definitely, I want to be (there) Sunday with Rodón going Sunday. I want to be in the lineup.”

Gonzalez, who hit .305 with nine homers, 53 RBIs and an .826 OPS in 96 games for the Red Sox last year, was supposed to be an important part of Boston’s second base equation entering 2026. Instead, he entered camp rehabbing a shoulder injury he suffered late last season, and once it didn’t improve, underwent a cleanup surgery in mid-March. He began the season on the 60-day injured list and didn’t see game action until last week in Portland.

Gonzalez homered in his first rehab game and played three times before leaving Friday’s game early with the hip issue and sitting out both weekend games for the Sea Dogs. Further tests revealed nothing wrong with the hip and he was back to action Tuesday at Polar Park. Still, the hip problem has delayed his return to the big leagues by at least a couple days.

“I wanted Thursday, just the beginning of the Yankees series,” Gonzalez said. “Even now, I would have been open to (the ongoing series in ) Colorado if the boys needed me go out there and play. Obviously, with the whole hip flexor thing, it kinda derailed it a little bit.

“I got hit by a pitch right on my hip flexor... Just precautionary, just to check it out and go from there. Everything feels good.”

Gonzalez will play seven innings as Worcester’s second baseman Wednesday, then is scheduled to have Thursday off to recover. He’s unsure of the plan for Friday. The Yankees will start three righties — Cam Schlittler, Will Warren and Gerrit Cole — in the first three games before the left-handed Rodón pitches on Sunday Night Baseball.

“Getting some at-bats and trying to be ready for this weekend,” Gonzalez said. “I wouldn’t say I’m feeling great. I feel good, not great. I’ve only had 10 at-bats or so. I feel like it’s going to take 15 or 20 more. Overall, I’ve felt a lot better than I was anticipating.”

The Red Sox envisioned a big role for Gonzalez, even before Isiah Kiner-Fafela hit the injured list with a forearm issue over the weekend. Now, with Anthony Seigler and Andruw Monasterio splitting second base duties, there’s a clear path for Gonzalez to get everyday at-bats, as long as he’s healthy. The 29-year-old can also mix in at designated hitter.

“Just playing the game, being on my feet for a while, just bouncing back,” he said of his progress. “I didn’t have a spring training so there’s that initial soreness when you get back from an offseason. Kinda dealing with that and feeling good, coming out healthy.”
