KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Vaibhav Sooryavanshi misses out again as India hand debuts to Suryansh Shedge and Prince Yadav.
  • No word on Sooryavanshi at the toss from skipper Shreyas Iyer.
  • The teenager needs to wait for his record-breaking debut in international cricket.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's 'youngest Indian-debutant' record wait continues

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to hold on a little longer for his shot at senior India cricket.

The 15-year-old, who remains on track to potentially become the youngest debutant in the country's history, missed out on selection for the second T20I against Ireland at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast on Sunday.

Rather than Sooryavanshi, it was Suryansh Shedge and Prince Yadav who earned their maiden India caps.

Speaking at the toss, captain Shreyas Iyer confirmed both changes and said:

"Suryansh Shedge and Prince Yadav come in. Both are making their debut. So these are the two changes we’ve made. [On debutant Shedge] He’s a powerful, destructive batter."

"Yes, he’s a sensational youngster who has been scoring runs in the domestic cricket and also in the IPL. He’s got tremendous amount of experience in the youth cricket. So definitely he’s performed in the A tours. So he’s getting, he’s reaping the benefits."

On Prince, Iyer was careful not to load excessive pressure onto the youngster ahead of his debut.

"Definitely it’s his first game, so I don’t want to put him under that much pressure," he said. "It’s important that he comes out here and experiences and gain the experience out of what is there to offer. And he must have seen the match, how we played in the previous game. So definitely he’s smart enough to adapt to it."

Why is Vaibhav Sooryvanshi being made to wait for his India debut?

While the news will disappoint plenty of fans eager to see the teenager in action, India's reasoning holds up. India became world champions by thrashing New Zealand by 96 runs to claim their third title.

That match saw opener Abhishek Sharma notch up a half-century, while his partner Sanju Samson smashed 89 runs en route to winning the Player of the Tournament award. Disrupting that combination for Sooryavanshi wouldn't make tactical sense right now.

However, just days ago, Sooryavanshi smashed the fastest fifty in List A history, reaching the milestone off only 11 balls against Sri Lanka A in the Tri-Nation Series final, eventually finishing with 94 off 29 deliveries that included 10 fours and eight sixes to set up India A's win under Tilak Varma's captaincy.

That knock preceded a stellar IPL 2026 season in which he claimed the Orange Cap with 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.31, also breaking Chris Gayle's record for most sixes in a single edition of the tournament.

Selectors chief Ajit Agarkar had earlier admitted that those IPL performances effectively earned Sooryavanshi a place on India's tours of Ireland and England, and at the Asian Games, on their own merit.

When can Vaibhav Sooryavanshi make his India debut?

After the Ireland sojourn, India will head to London to take on England in a five-match T20I series. The first match is on July 1, and it remains to be seen whether Gautam Gambhir and Co. give Sooryavanshi an opportunity.
