Ronald Koeman has resigned as head coach of the Netherlands national team, mere hours after their stunning elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup by Morocco in the Round of 32.

The loss represented the earliest departure in the tournament's history for the Dutch, who had never before failed to advance beyond at least the Round of 16.

In a statement shared on his Instagram account, Koeman said: "Last night I took the decision to end my stint as head coach of the Dutch national team. We all shared the dream of making history at this World Cup, but we fell short. No one is more disappointed by that than I am. As head coach, the responsibility ultimately rests with me."

The 63-year-old former Barcelona and Everton boss, who was in his second tenure leading the Oranje, also suggested a possible retirement from coaching, as per The Mirror US.

He added: "Moreover, the past few years have made me realize once again that there are more important things than football. When someone you love dearly is fighting a tough battle, your perspective changes."

Koeman faced widespread criticism for his defensive tactics in the defeat to Morocco, deploying five defenders in a formation that caught even opposing coach Mohamed Ouahbi off guard. Despite defending his strategy at the post-game press conference, Koeman could not avoid the intense scrutiny that followed the Netherlands' penalty shootout elimination.

Crysencio Summerville had his spot-kick stopped by Yassine Bounou, enabling Ismael Saibari to convert the decisive penalty and send Morocco into the Round of 16 to face tournament co-hosts Canada.

The Dutch players who faltered in the shootout, among them Justin Kluivert and Quinten Timber, were subsequently targeted with racist abuse on social media, prompting condemnation from the Dutch football association (KNVB).

Koeman's departure brings to a close a tenure that promised much but ultimately fell short of expectations. He guided the Netherlands to the final of the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League and the semifinals of Euro 2024, yet failed to advance beyond the Round of 32 in his first World Cup at the helm.

During his reign, the Dutch accumulated seven points in the group stage, winning their group to set up the ill-fated encounter with Morocco.

Koeman's choice to ditch the Netherlands' traditional attacking philosophy in favor of a more reserved approach drew sharp criticism from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who said: "This loss is on Koeman because I didn't recognize this Dutch team. He lost with an identity that is not the Dutch identity."

As a player, Koeman was a key member of the Netherlands squad that claimed the European Championship in 1988 and advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals in 1994. His coaching career has taken him through stints at Ajax, Benfica, PSV Eindhoven, and Southampton, in addition to his tenure with the national team.

The KNVB will now embark on the hunt for a new manager to guide the Netherlands through the 2028 European Championship qualifying campaign, as the nation comes to terms with the consequences of their earliest World Cup elimination and the conclusion of the Koeman era.
