The Atletico Madrid striker is still regarded as one of Barcelona’s priority transfer targets, with the Catalan giants expected to reassess their options once the 2026 FIFA World Cup comes to an end.
The Argentine forward returned to the starting lineup for his country’s Round of 16 clash against Egypt and helped Argentina produce one of the tournament’s most memorable comebacks.
Trailing by two goals with fewer than 20 minutes left, the reigning world champions turned the game around before Enzo Fernandez’s stoppage-time winner secured a place in the quarter-finals.
While Barcelona are interested in Julian Alvarez, the striker made it clear that his attention is on international duty rather than the ongoing transfer rumours.
Alvarez keeps Barcelona transfer speculation on hold
After Argentina’s dramatic victory, Alvarez was once again asked about his future following earlier comments that suggested a transfer could be the best outcome for everyone involved.

However, the Argentine chose not to expand on the topic.
“No. I’m focused on the quarterfinals; important things are coming up now, so let’s focus on that.”
Instead, the forward reflected on Argentina’s remarkable turnaround after finding themselves two goals behind at halftime.
“Impressive—so many emotions. At halftime we were down 2-0, and we said we had to fight until the end; we knew we’d get our chances, and the goals came,” he said.
Alvarez also praised the winning goal that completed the comeback and sent Argentina into the next round.
“I saw him make his run into the box; Lautaro sent in a spectacular cross—a great goal.”

The Julian Alvarez Barcelona transfer story is expected to regain momentum once the World Cup finishes.
As reported before, communication between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid remains open, but there is no expectation of meaningful negotiations until the tournament concludes.
The Blaugrana continue to view the Argentine as an ideal addition to Hansi Flick’s attack, making him one of the leading names among Barcelona transfer targets this summer.
Even so, Atletico Madrid remain unwilling to sell Julian Alvarez, repeatedly insisting that one of their biggest stars is not available.
Even so, that stance has not discouraged Barcelona completely.
In fact, club officials are expected to keep a close eye on the striker’s situation, aware that the transfer market can change quickly and that opportunities often emerge later in the Barcelona summer transfer window.
