Bruno Guimaraes has told Newcastle United he wants to leave, making clear his preference is a move to Arsenal.

The Brazil midfielder has informed the club of his desire to seek a fresh challenge, with the Premier League champions stepping up their long-standing interest.

The Gunners have been circling for some time. Mikel Arteta had weighed up approaches for either Guimaraes or Sandro Tonali, before the latter joined Tottenham in a £100m deal.

Attention has since turned firmly towards the Newcastle captain. Talks have so far been exploratory.

According to David Ornstein, the conditions of a deal worth up to £60m have been examined via intermediaries, though Arsenal are yet to make any direct contact with Newcastle.

A formal, improved offer is now expected to follow. His stance marks a notable shift.

Guimaraes has been the heartbeat of Newcastle’s midfield since arriving from Lyon in 2022, and had spoken of building something special on Tyneside.

At 28, however, he appears tempted by the chance to compete for major honours elsewhere.

The World Cup ended in personal disappointment, too. Guimaraes missed a penalty as Brazil crashed out in the last 16 to Norway, an exit that may have sharpened his desire for a new start.

His pedigree, though, remains beyond question. Newcastle, for their part, are desperate to keep him.

The club have already lost Tonali and Anthony Gordon this summer, and losing their captain would trigger another major rebuild.

Eddie Howe is determined to avoid a repeat of last year’s drawn-out Alexander Isak saga. Their negotiating position remains strong.

Guimaraes has two years left on his deal, plus a further option, and the Magpies insist he is not for sale.

Given the going rate for midfielders, they would demand far more than the £60m so far mooted.

A resolution may take time. Should Guimaraes arrive, Arsenal would likely sanction a midfield exit, with Christian Norgaard among those who could move on.
