Stateline, NV – Steph Curry, Joe Pavelski, and Mardy Fish, the last three winners of the American Century Championship, all took part in a chaotic press conference at the Edgewood Tahoe Resort’s media room on Thursday. The mood was tense from the jump and only got tenser as reporters ignored Fish’s declaration at the start of the presser that no one on the stage wanted to play with LeBron James.
Some reporters pressed on and asked about the Golden State Warriors’ continued interest in the “King,” getting little intel from a seemingly bothered Curry. Fish’s call for minimal LeBron questions was largely ignored.
While some, like ESPN’s Anthony Slater, asked about the percentage of LeBron going to the Bay, leading Curry to essentially pass the buck back onto James, one reporter asked if Steph had personally reached out to LeBron in light of his meeting with Draymond Green that day.
“Stay out of my personal business,” Curry said, to big laughter in the media room. While he may have had a smile on his face while saying it, there was a clear frustration in the room about the sheer number of LeBron questions. When someone asked if Curry would recruit LeBron to the American Century Championship, he was visibly relieved.
“In the golf tournament? Thank you for that. Absolutely,” Curry said. “If he can get a jet out here for tomorrow, that would be awesome.”
Regardless of what LeBron chooses, the two are clearly always going to be friends. Their battles in the 2015-2018 NBA Finals were the stuff of legend and were arguably the peak of the league in the 21st Century. They’ve won Olympic gold together on Team USA. Their bond is sacred.
Still, the specific response to the LeBron-Draymond meeting is especially interesting in light of developments in the rumor mill about what it could mean.
Caroline’s Cupcakes reports Draymond is joining LeBron in Cleveland
Caroline’s Cupcakes, which famously broke the first LeBron return story in 2014, reported that the plan is for Draymond to join LeBron in his second Cleveland homecoming. Bronny James would be joining them, too.
Perhaps there is a correlation to Steph’s frustration with LeBron questions and potentially losing his longest-tenured teammate, with whom he won four championships, to the team he beat for three of those rings.
We'll see if that frustration lingers during the ACC, which takes place tomorrow until Sunday (July 10-12) on NBC, the NBC Sports Network, and Peacock.
