Sofia Rivera outlasts Erin Lee in first round of U.S. Junior Girls

Sofia Rivera of St. Augustine had the last word in the last match of the day to be completed on July 15 in the U.S. Junior Girls Championship.

Rivera, a rising senior at Beachside High School and the Class 3A individual state champion last year, defeated Erin Lee of San Ramon, Calif., 1-up with a par on the 18th hole at the Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham, N.C., to advance to the round of 32. The two halved four holes in a row with pars after Lee squared the match by winning the par-4 13th hole with a par.

Rivera qualified for match play by tying for 11th in the 36-hole stroke-play qualifier at 4-under-par 140.

Rivera will face Maria Isabella Errichetto of Colombia at 9:45 a.m. on July 16 in the second round. Errichetto defeated Yisoo Min of Korea 4 and 3 in their first-round match.

Errichetto resides in nearby Southern Pines, N.C., and has verbally committed to Virginia for the 2027 academic year. Rivera, the Times-Union's 2025 First Coast girls high school player of the year, has committed to Indiana.

Lee had the lead twice against Rivera, winning the third and eighth holes. Rivera equaled the match at No. 11 with a par, then took a 1-up lead with a par at No. 12.

Lee then won the 13th hole with par to set the stage for the final four holes.
