ESPN's earth-shattering price tag for Drake Maye in hypothetical trade

Let's go ahead and get that out of the way. He's a 23-year-old quarterback coming off a 2025 season where he won the AFC East division, won an AFC Championship, led the team to the Super Bowl and finished as the runner-up for the MVP award behind Matthew Stafford.
That guy isn't going anywhere.
With that said, it's fun assessing value through hypotheticals, which is exactly what ESPN's Bill Barnwell did in a recent article, naming players worth first-round picks on NFL teams. For the Patriots, Barnwell had Maye's price tag at six first-round draft picks.
Barnwell wrote:
"Well, when you're a 23-year-old quarterback who came within a couple of votes of winning league MVP in your second season, you're going to be worth a lot! We've seen quarterbacks make this sort of early-career leap and then stagnate before eventually leaving the organization, as Carson Wentz did after his breakout second season in Philadelphia. But Maye's auspicious 2025 campaign has to inspire confidence that he'll be a high-end QB for the next decade, if not longer."
Finding an elite quarterback can sometimes feel next to impossible. Just ask the New York Jets what that search has been like for them over the years. That realization makes Maye's position invaluable, especially if he takes another step forward in Year 3.
The number of draft picks is enticing, but the Patriots would probably be better off building around one of the few unicorns at quarterback in the league.
