Donald Trump would be the first to acknowledge possessing minimal understanding of the intricate tactical expertise required to succeed in a World Cup encounter, yet he persists in delivering bombastic sports takes that inevitably result in public humiliation.

Following England's 2-1 World Cup semifinal defeat to Argentina, President Trump seized the moment to criticize England captain Harry Kane's performance, standing alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Trump claimed England erred by converting Kane into a defensive player in the 2-1 setback against Argentina. That evaluation bore no resemblance to what transpired on the pitch. Kane did retreat deeper on occasions to facilitate build-up play, but that differs significantly from being repositioned to center-back.

Trump then offered his perspective on Kane's showing. "I think they perhaps made a mistake when they made him a defensive player, but what do I know about soccer?" Trump said. "They took the lead and took their best player and put him on defense. We gotta be a little offensive right? What do I know about coaching? It was a little unusual, but Harry is a great guy."

Trump drew criticism from World Cup spectators who watched Kane up close and observed him dropping from the No. 9 position into deeper areas — a trademark move he has deployed for years at Tottenham, Bayern Munich, and England — while also pressing and helping disrupt Argentina's build-up.

Kane's defensive contribution was most apparent in the sequence immediately preceding Elliot Anderson's booking in the 37th minute. Argentina star Lionel Messi danced past Djed Spence and a fully committed Kane before Anderson's late challenge brought him down.

Kane finished with 26 touches, one shot off target, 0.02 expected goals, 0.02 expected assists, six defensive interventions, and two duels won. Kane's heat map revealed he spent as much time in his own penalty box as in the opposition's. This was not the result of a positional switch. Following Anthony Gordon's goal in the 55th minute that handed England the lead, Tuchel overhauled the team's approach.

England retreated into a defensive shape, registering just 36 percent possession until Messi broke the deadlock late in the contest. Messi teed up Enzo Fernandez for a goal in the 85th minute, before chipping the ball in stoppage time for Lautaro Martinez's extra-time winning header.
