The Ville battled nearly all the way back from a 17-point second half deficit before falling 72-68 to La Familia in the first of a three-game series between Louisville and Kentucky alums in this year’s The Basketball Tournament.

Montrezl Harrell had a shot to hit the Elam Ending mark of 71 and close out the Wildcat alums but it came up short. On the other end, rivalry legend Darryl Morsell slipped a screen on a baseline out-of-bounds play to end the contest with an uncontested dunk.

Chris Jones led The Ville with 16 points, while Harrell and David Johnson both scored 12. Morsell, who played his college ball at Maryland and Marquette, led La Familia with 17.

The two squads will square off again Monday night at Freedom Hall for a 7 p.m. contest that will be carried nationally on FS1. If The Ville is able to even the series, a game three will be played Wednesday night back at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington.

Whoever advances from the best of three series moves on to the 16-team, single elimination format, where the champion will be awarded a $2 million, winner-take-all prize.
