4 Steelers on the roster bubble headed into training camp

In a week, the Pittsburgh Steelers will kick off training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe and the reality is much of the 53-man roster is set. However, there are four guys we keep coming back to as players who are good enough to make the team but are stuck in some awkward circumstances that could shut them out.

Quarterback Mason Rudolph
We continue to go back and forth if the Steelers would really be willing to go into the season with only Will Howard and Drew Allar as the backups to Aaron Rodgers. Mason Rudolph isn't going to win the team any playoff games but if the team needs a spot start or two, he's the best option.
Safety Darnell Savage
In doing our 53-man roster projection, we only found room for three safeties and we understand that isn't entirely realistic. However, the Steelers are six deep at cornerback with Jalen Ramsey being more than capable of playing safety at a high level. This means Savage, who was a late offseason addition might not make the final roster.
Running back Eli Heidenreich
If it were up to us, we would give the rookie Heidenreich a spot on the roster over Kaleb Johnson or Riley Nowakowski on the running back depth chart. His explosiveness and versatility are special and he can help the team in multiple ways. But the staff seem committed to Johnson for now as well as having the fullback Nowakowski as well.
Safety Sebastian Castro
Castro is in the exact same position as Savage. The two of them are going to duke it out throughout training camp without knowing if either guy will end up making the team.
